Harrow, Fleet Street
FancyaPint?'s review...
This Grade II listed pub was a legendary Fleet Street drinking haunt when the Sun was based over the road. It's so tied into that era that the small downstairs bar is called the "Vincent Mulchrone" room (a famous Daily Mail journalist and features writer). The building itself goes back over three centuries - apparently there's been a pub on the site since 1769, though the present building was erected in 1826. You can still see some of the original features in the upstairs dining room, with its uneven floorboards and 18th century pitch pine panelling. The best thing about the Harrow is that the staff are cheerful and friendly. People seem to drop in and out, and if you go in more than once they'll recognise you. With all the nearby tourist traps this is a very good choice for a quiet drink during the day, but as it's not a big place it may fill up quickly with office and law firm staff on weekday evenings - "one for the road" perhaps, rather than "in for the night".

only just discovered this pub after a year of working 100 yards away. have to agree with the reviewer: the staff are extremely friendly and make going there a pleasure. the food menu is reasonable, as is the beer selection (although not spectacular on the ale front), but overall it makes for a welcome alternative to most of the other fleet street fare...
