A lively pub at the top end of Berwick Street Market. The surrounding area with the market and shops is still a bit of old London (although changing fast) and this pub is just what most pubs in the area used to be like. There are a couple of real ales on the hand pumps and the rest is what you'd expect from a proper boozer. Most of the clientele are regulars, supplemented by the usual Friday- and Saturday-nighters. Enjoy it while it lasts.

A good example of a pub which is popular due to location only. Extremely rude landlord who didn't want to accept card despite the transaction being well over the minimum. He then 'went off on one' about how people who used cards prevented people from being served quicker. (note - we were the only customers and were charged 50p for the privilege of using card). Also toilets are behind a door marked 'private'. The mind boggles, although one can assume they want to put off non payers from abusing the facilities. Fair enough.

You either like the 1970s vibe or you don't, good spot for drinking outside amid the stench of the market stalls and mix of odd people that so popularly charcaterises soho, half decent Guinness and lager served by attractive eastern european barmaids which keeps the punters and the manager entertained, getting popular with soho's creative types who go there for its location and sense of good old fashioned pub values, and as usual with soho pubs, the tiniest, blandest toilets you can imagine, upstairs drinking space is available too.

A good, accurate review from FAP - if the beer was better it would deserve a fourth star. Adnams and Directors are OK but nowt special. Always a good mix of clientele in an increasingly one-dimensional area, and a nice bustling atmos. Handy shelving outside for smoking and people-watching in the summer. Barstaff easy on the eye.

Tottenham Court Road: Take the South Oxford Street exit and turn left out of the station. Stay on Oxford Street until you reach Berwick Street and turn left. It's a short way down on the left. Oxford Circus: leave the tube at the Oxford Street East exit and head towards Centre Point, Berwick Street is the 4th road on your right. Walk down a short way and you'll see the pub on your left.
